Breast augmentation was the most popular form of cosmetic surgery for a number of years, including in 2009. In that year alone, 311,957 breast enhancement surgeries were done using different techniques to insert breast implants. Among these techniques are those that go under the armpits or through incisions in the nipples, as well as under the breasts. There are also those placed through your underarm.

Here are the two of the different types of breast augmentation based on the position of incisions:

  1. Subglandular implants – These breast implants are placed through incisions created in your armpits, which are also called transaxillary incisions. These are then inserted through a channel from under your arms to your breasts. These performed with saline implants, which are saltwater solution-filled sacs. Saline breast implants are flexible and can be inflated and adjusted during the operation. This is mostly popular for competitive weight lifters or athletic women, because the implants will not shift when their chest muscles are flexed. This technique typically entails less healing time than with implants placed below the muscle.
  2. Submuscular implants – Breast implants may also be submuscular or placed under your chest muscle. The surgeon usually places implants under the muscle for patients with small breasts and less tissue to work with – the implants positioned under the pectoral muscle put more tissue between the implant and your skin, making visible ripples in your breast much rarer than in subglandular implants. This translates to a more natural-looking breast appearance and also provides the advantage of more accurate mammograms or cancer detection than those placed above your muscle.

Transaxillary breast augmentation is done with a variety of sizes and textures of breast implants, and you can discuss your preferences with your surgeon. For instances, implants can be round or teardrop-shaped. Here are some distinctions:

  • Round – Circular, flattened spheres giving your breasts fullness on the top and bottom. They are most commonly used and are less expensive than their counterpart. They come in smooth or textured varieties, with the latter as the most common, softest, and least expensive.
  • Teardrop-shaped – Have a more natural contour, with the fullest part of your breast at the bottom. They are always textured to hold them in place and avoid having them rotate and protrude in an unnatural way.

But it’s not just about breast augmentation surgery these days. There are now non-invasive, far less expensive options, such as herbal breast enhancement pills, creams, and gels that can be bought over the counter. Talk to your doctor about this form of supplementation, as there are considerations to make. If you have a history of breast cancer, for instance, the estrogenic properties of these supplements are not good for you.
